As it reaches Messein, the Moselle, coming from the Vosges, comes up against a limestone hill. It flows around this limestone ridge towards the west, where it originally joined the Meuse at Pagny-sur-Meuse. A major geological event in the Quaternary caused it to leave the Meuse watershed and curve eastwards. The Moselle joins the Meurthe at Pompey.
